Just found out the ending of 'The Mysterious Island' from 1874 was basically a walking volcano blowing up the whole island...

I was reading this old Jules Verne book for a challenge and got to the last 20 pages where the volcano underneath the island starts erupting. The characters literally have to watch their entire home get torn apart by lava and explosions while they're on a raft. Then a single rock formation shaped like a giant fish stays standing as a monument. Found it in a used bookstore on Grand Avenue last Tuesday and the ending just felt so out of nowhere for a survival story. Has anyone else read a classic that ended with nature just demolishing everything for no reason?

the whole island getting demolished" used to bug me too, like why build up all that survival stuff just to blow it up? but honestly after thinking about it, nature not caring about their happy ending makes it feel more real.

Walking volcano blowing up the whole island" sounds like my last attempt at baking a cake.
