I thought the ending of House of Leaves was just a gimmick until I flipped back and saw the index matched a footnote in chapter 3
I was sure the whole thing was just random weirdness for shock value, but last month in a Denver coffee shop I actually traced the footnotes and found they loop back to the first page. Now I can't tell if that makes it genius or a cheap trick. Did anyone else go down that rabbit hole, or am I the only one who spent a whole Sunday on it?
Reading House of Leaves is like doing your taxes while someone slowly loses their mind in the next room. I made it to chapter 9 before I started checking my own apartment for hallways that were longer than they should be. The index thing is cute, sure, but Danielewski already had me flipping pages upside down and holding the book to a mirror like an idiot, so one more loop felt like a party trick at that point. Still, there's something about a book that makes you feel like the maze is in your hands and not just on the page. You spent a whole Sunday on it and came out the other side, which is more than most people can say.
