Doctor Sleep's ending felt wrong until I counted the pages

Everyone raves about the final showdown, but the real twist for me was finding out King originally had Danny die in an early draft, read that in an interview from 2013. The published version feels rushed, like he changed his mind halfway through and patched it together. Anyone else think the true ending should've been the one he cut?
