Chat with my dad made me rethink that Stephen King cop out ending

I was talking to my old man last Tuesday about weird book endings, and he brought up the end of 'Under the Dome' by Stephen King. I always thought the alien kid reveal was a total letdown, like King just gave up. But my dad said he saw it different, that the whole point was how small and random our problems are in the grand scheme. It hit me different because he never talks about books, you know? He's a retired mechanic who reads mostly repair manuals. So hearing him defend that ending got me thinking. Maybe I was too harsh on it back in 2009 when I first read it. Has anyone else had a conversation that totally flipped your view on a book ending you used to hate?

Whoa wait your dad read Under the Dome? That's wild to me! My uncle was a diesel mechanic for 30 years and he'd pick up a Tom Clancy novel maybe once a decade. The fact he not only finished it but had a whole take on the ending is blowing my mind. Did he say he liked the alien kid part or just that he understood what King was going for?

Right, because who needs sleep when you can debate alien kids with your dad?
