Bought a $40 'collector's edition' for one insane ending, regret it

I grabbed this supposedly rare horror novel at a used book fair in Portland last month because the seller swore the final chapter was one of the wildest twists ever written. Ended up being 300 pages of tedious setup and then the main character just wakes up from a dream, no joke, everything was a dream and nothing else happened. The book was missing the last 10 pages anyway, so I didn't even get the real ending, just a torn page that said 'to be continued' in a different font. I keep wondering if the seller knew it was incomplete and just wanted to dump it on someone. Has anyone else been burned by a scammy book fair vendor or an overhyped ending that turned out to be pure nonsense?
