My old mentor Tony said I should switch to a slower trimmer speed for detail work - I thought he was crazy until I tried it

Tony's been cutting hair since the 80s, told me after 3 months on the job I was rushing around too fast with my Oster 76 on full speed. Said I'd miss half the fine lines around ears and necks. I ignored him for like 6 months, kept doing my own thing. Then I finally slowed it down to medium-low setting on a client who wanted a super clean fade. Honest to god, the hairline came out way sharper than before. But I still see guys online saying speed equals efficiency. Anyone else get told some old school advice that actually worked against your instincts?

Tbh, your story about Tony reminded me of this barber I knew back in 2017. He was always bragging about how he could finish a haircut in 12 minutes flat with his cordless clippers on high. Then he tried to do a zero fade on my buddy and ended up digging a chunk out of his neckline because he was going too fast. The whole shop busted out laughing but it took him like 20 minutes to fix it with a slow trimmer. Speed is great until you gotta fix a mistake, you know?

12 minutes flat" he actually said that out loud? What kind of sick bet did he have going on with himself to think that was a good idea?

Wasn't 2017 though, that story was from 2016.
