My mentor in Chicago told me to charge $40 for a basic cut, but I started at $25 instead.

He said I was leaving money on the table and hurting the shop's value, but I was scared of losing new clients. After six months, I raised my price and actually got busier because people took the service more seriously. Do you think starting low to build a book is smart, or does it just set the wrong tone from day one?

Your story about raising prices and getting busier shows that perceived value really matters.

Starting low just trains people to expect cheap work.

See, @wyatt513, sometimes you gotta start somewhere to prove you can deliver quality work.
