Fixed my fading lineups with a 2 dollar spray bottle trick
I was struggling with my edge ups fading after like 2 hours for months. Then an older barber at the shop in Houston told me to mist the skin with witch hazel before applying the razor. Tried it on 3 clients this week and their lineups still looked crisp 6 hours later. Has anyone else tried something simple that made this big a difference?

12 years cutting hair and I still learn something new every week. Witch hazel works because it tightens the skin and cuts down on oil, so the razor glides cleaner. Keep a small spray bottle at your station and mist lightly, too much and it just makes a mess.

Nah man I gotta push back on this one. Witch hazel is astringent yeah but it can actually dry the skin out too much and cause irritation, especially on people with sensitive skin or if you're doing a lot of detail work around the ears and neckline. I've seen clients get red and bumpy after a shave where the barber used it heavy. I think it's better to use a good pre-shave oil or just a warm towel to open up the pores and soften the hair, then go in with a light glycerin based product instead. The witch hazel thing works for some folks but it's not a one size fits all trick and I feel like too many new barbers treat it like magic. Keep it simple and let the blade do the work with a little slip from something moisturizing.
