Can we talk about the stat that barbers see more skin cancer than most doctors do?
I was flipping through a trade magazine in the shop last month and a dermatologist wrote that barbers are basically the front line for spotting skin cancer on the scalp and neck, since most folks never look up there and their doctor sees them with clothes on for maybe 15 minutes a year. I had a regular guy, 58, sat in my chair for 6 years, and I finally noticed a dark spot near his part that had gotten bigger and had a rough edge, so I mentioned it and he went to get it looked at. Turned out to be a basal cell thing, caught early, and he brought me a coffee the next week and said his doc told him I probably saved him a lot of grief. Now I keep a little mirror by the station and I make a point of checking the crown and behind the ears on every cut, even the 20 minute ones. It's not like I'm diagnosing anything, I just say hey, you might want a pro to look at that. Any of you all get pushback from clients when you bring up a spot, or do most of them take it fine?
