Took me 8 years to realize I was overmixing my muffin batter

I always wondered why my muffins came out dense and tough. Then my sister watched me mix and said 'you're beating the life out of them' and it clicked. Anyone else have that aha moment with mixing?

I mean honestly I just mix it until it looks combined and call it a day. I've never noticed a huge difference whether I overmix or not, maybe I just can't tell. Feels like people make a bigger deal out of it than it really is.

I had the same problem with banana bread for like five years. My grandma finally told me to just stir the flour in with a fork until it disappears and no more. I was using a hand mixer on medium speed, way too long. Now I count my stirs, usually around 10 to 12 max, and the texture is so much lighter. It feels weird at first because you think you're leaving lumps, but those little lumps actually cook out fine. Idk why nobody told me sooner, but it really changed my baking game.
