The time I learned butter temperature actually matters for cookies
I spent like 6 months making flat, greasy chocolate chip cookies and thought I just sucked at baking. Then my sister pointed out I was melting the butter instead of softening it to room temp. Has anyone else had a basic baking rule that just flew over their head for way too long?

You think that's bad? I once convinced myself that "softened butter" meant leaving it on the counter for like five minutes and then microwaving it for 15 seconds... I must've made a hundred sad, flat cookies before my wife finally stepped in. @oliviabennett's tip about the time frame is key, I started setting my butter out first thing and now I actually have cookies with structure.

Oh the melted butter thing got me too lol. I switched to room temp butter and it was like a whole new world. Also make sure your baking soda isn't expired, that was another dumb one for me. I kept wondering why my cookies looked like pancakes even after I fixed the butter situation. Now I set my butter out like an hour before I start mixing and it makes a huge difference.
