Oh man, that's the classic rookie mistake. A healthy starter often looks totally inactive when it's just sitting there. It's not a bubbling potion 24/7. The real test is feeding it and watching it double in size a few hours later. Mine looks like sad pancake batter right before it goes absolutely wild. She probably just expects it to look like a science fair volcano all the time.

So what's the actual sign it's gone bad then? If a quiet starter is normal, how do you tell the difference between that and one that's just dead? Is it only the smell?
