My grandmother's bread recipe used to be a guessing game

She'd write 'handful of flour' and 'butter the size of an egg' and I'd just have to hope for the best. Now I weigh everything to the gram and my loaves actually come out the same every time. Anyone else's family recipes drive you crazy with vague measurements?

Buying a kitchen scale was the best thing I ever did for my baking.

Honestly, a kitchen scale is a total game changer. I had the same problem with my mom's cookie recipe calling for "a lump of butter about the size of your fist" and it drove me crazy. Weighing everything to the gram just takes the luck out of it and you can actually trust the results. Plus once you know the exact weights you can mess around with the ratios on purpose instead of hoping for the best. Tbh I think half the "secret family recipes" that get lost are just because nobody ever bothered to write down the real amounts.
