Serious question, has anyone else noticed a big jump in sourdough starter requests?

Last week, three separate people at the Portland farmers market asked if I could share a piece of mine, which never used to happen. Is this just a local thing, or are people getting back into wild yeast again?

Serious question? It's just sourdough, not a medical supply. Maybe people saw a video and got curious... happens every few years.

Wait, does that mean I can admit I burned my first three starters and cried over spilled flour? But seriously, I think wendy_murphy16 has a point. That whole pandemic self-sufficiency thing really got into people's heads. I still have my sourdough starter in the back of the fridge looking like a science experiment I forgot about. It's kind of funny how we all suddenly felt like we had to learn to make bread from scratch, even though half of us don't even have a stand mixer. Maybe it's just something to do that makes you feel a little more in control of something.

Hold up, it's not just about a video. Think about how many people started gardening and canning during the pandemic. That DIY, self-sufficient mindset stuck around. Now when folks see a potential shortage, even of flour, they jump on the "make it yourself" trend. Sourdough is the perfect next step because it feels like a basic life skill. It's less about the bread and more about feeling ready for anything.
