Brunch joke on my croissants now has me proofing dough longer

I always sped through dough proofs for quick bakes. Then I brought croissants to a weekend brunch. A pal laughed and said they tasted too good to be homemade. That silly comment really stuck with me. So I started letting dough rest overnight, and the taste is way better.

Who knew a backhanded compliment could actually help, right? Time really does change everything.

But isn't a backhanded compliment just a sneaky insult? I've watched them mess with people's heads more than help, even after years. Like telling someone "you clean up nice" implies they usually look bad. Time might smooth things over, but that initial dig often leaves a mark.
