Warning: my roommate let his cousin crash on our couch for what he called 'a couple nights' and it turned into 19 days
My roommate Marcus asked me about a month ago if his cousin Dre could sleep on our couch for two nights while he sorted out a housing thing. I said fine, whatever, two nights. Well, two nights became 19 days. Dre was nice enough but he never left. He'd be there when I got home from my shift at the warehouse, he'd be there when I woke up, and he ate my leftovers out of the fridge like three separate times. The worst part was Marcus kept saying 'he's leaving tomorrow' every single day, and by day 12 I was hiding my good snacks in my closet like a weirdo. I finally snapped when Dre used my towel and hung it back up soaking wet, and I told Marcus either Dre leaves by Friday or I'm talking to the landlord. Dre left on a Thursday, which was two days late, but at least my towel is dry now. How do you even bring something like this up without blowing up the whole friendship?
My old roommate pulled the same thing with his brother back in 2019, said three days and it hit 16. What worked was I stopped talking to the roommate about it and talked to the brother directly, just told him flat out that the couch thing was done and gave him a date. It went way better than going through my roommate because there was no middle man playing telephone. Then I sat down with my roommate after and said I wasn't mad, but next time the answer is no unless we both agree ahead of time. Putting it in plain words like that kept the friendship from blowing up. You already did the hard part by drawing a line, just avoid making it about Marcus being a bad guy and keep it about the rule going forward.
