I blew $180 on a mini fridge with a lock for my room and it saved my sanity, but everyone here says just talk it out
Every time someone posts about a roommate stealing their food, the top reply is always the same: sit down and have a grown up talk about it. I tried that route for 5 months with my old roommate Dan in our place near Cleveland. After the third time my leftovers vanished and he swore up and down it was him sleepwalking, I gave up on the talking plan. I put $180 down on a small fridge with a key lock and stuck it in my room. That little box ended every single fight we had about groceries overnight. People here call that a band aid fix and say you should work on the friendship instead, but honestly I think a lock is cheaper than a therapist and way faster than a heart to heart. Has anyone else just bought their way out of a roommate problem instead of talking it out? Did it actually last?
I read somewhere that fighting over food is like the number one reason roommates stop being friends, so a lock sounds less like a band aid and more like the smartest $180 you ever spent. Sounds like it lasted fine because it killed the problem at the source instead of making you both fake nice about it.
