Visited a friend's shed in Austin and saw a genius shelf trick

I was down in Austin last weekend helping a buddy organize his workshop shed. He had this simple setup using those heavy duty wire shelving units from Home Depot, but here's the twist - he bolted them directly to the studs instead of letting them stand. It freed up floor space for his table saw and miter station. The whole thing cost him maybe $60 for two 4-foot shelves and some brackets. Has anyone else tried mounting shelves to the wall instead of using freestanding racks in a small shed?

Floating the shelves off the studs worked great in my tiny garage, saved a ton of room.

Right, because nothing says "I love my garage" like shelves that look like they're about to take flight every time you close the door a little too hard. I bet you had to bolt everything down on them too, or else your socket set would end up on the floor the next time a truck drives by. Floating shelves are great, until you accidentally brush against one and it gives you a little swayback dance. At least you can say your garage has more character than a storage unit, mine's just got a bunch of anchored down junk that's not going anywhere.
