Used to hand-dig every post hole, now I rent a one-man auger and it's not even close
For about 4 summers I dug every fence and pergola post hole with a clamshell digger in my clay soil outside Omaha. A 3 foot hole took me 45 minutes of sweating, cussing, and prying out rocks, and by the end of a 6 post job my back was done for the week. Last month I rented a one-man auger from the local rental place for $58 and had all 8 holes for a shed foundation done in under an hour. The catch is the machine will grab a root and try to twist your arms off if you don't throttle down fast, I nearly learned that the hard way on hole number two. But honestly, the rental cost is nothing compared to the time and the fact that I can still stand up straight after the job. Has anyone else made the switch and found a better brand of auger bit for rocky ground, or do you just accept the occasional dead stop and go at it with a digging bar?

You mean "used to" past tense? Sounds like you still do, just faster.
