Showerthought: My neighbor's 'free wood pile' cost me more than buying lumber from Home Depot would have.
He said it was a favor, but after sorting through 60 boards and pulling out nails for 2 hours, I realized I spent way more on gas and time than just getting fresh 2x4s. Has anyone else fallen for the 'free material' trap like this?

Learned that the hard way myself. Now I only grab free wood if I can see the pile is all pressure treated or cedar, otherwise I know I'm gonna spend three hours with a pry bar and magnet. Sorted through a "free" pallet stack once that ended up having more twist and rot than a bad produce aisle. Stick to fresh lumber for framing or structural stuff, free piles are mostly good for firewood or shop projects where looks don't matter.
