PSA: a $40 permit keeps your shed legal, and I got burned in Mesa

I always figured a shed under 120 sq ft in Mesa, AZ didn't need anything from the city, and a neighbor told me the same thing. Then the inspector came by last month for a fence complaint, saw my 10x12 shed sitting 2 feet from the property line, and handed me a notice. I guess the size limit for no permit here is actually 120 sq ft but only if it's under 10 feet tall and set back a certain distance, which mine was not. It cost me $175 in fees plus moving the whole thing 4 feet over on skids with two buddies. Did anyone else learn the setback rules the hard way, or am I the only one who winged it?
