My neighbor's comment about my shed foundation made me rethink everything

I was digging post holes for a new 10x12 shed last weekend and my neighbor Bob comes over and asks why I'm bothering with concrete footings. He said he just sets his shed on gravel and calls it good. I told him I followed the county code for frost depth and he just laughed and walked away. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I overengineered this thing or if Bob's shed is gonna be crooked in 2 years. Anyone else get second-guessed by a neighbor mid-project?

Funny thing about Bob, he'll probably be fine until the first big rain or thaw. Gravel can shift over time, especially under a 10x12 structure that's gonna hold a lot of weight. Your footings are the difference between a shed that stays square and one that looks like a funhouse mirror in a few years. Bob's method works great if you don't mind leveling your shed every spring and fighting doors that won't shut. You did it right, don't let Bob's chuckle get in your head.

...and that's kind of how it goes with most things, isn't it? People like Bob will always take the shortcut that works today and hope tomorrow's problem never shows up. It's like how everybody in my neighborhood rushes to patch a tire with fix-a-flat instead of just getting a new one, then acts surprised when it blows out on the highway. You did the hard part now so you don't have to keep fixing it later. Bob's method is basically the same as building a house on sand, it'll hold for a bit but then the whole thing starts leaning sideways. It's that short term thinking that seems to sneak into everything from sheds to people's budgets, always picking the quick fix over the solid foundation.
