My brother in law told me to skip the permit for my shed and now I'm out $800
Last summer I wanted to put up a 10x12 shed in my backyard in Parma. My brother in law, who has built like four decks, said permits were a waste of money and nobody checks. So I poured a slab and framed it up over two weekends, no paperwork at all. Then a city inspector spotted it from the alley in October and I got hit with an $800 fine plus I have to pay $250 for the after the fact permit. Anyone else get burned by a relative's "don't worry about it" advice on a backyard build?
Learned this the hard way too, but mine was a fence and the neighbor turned me in over a property line fight. Call your city building department first and ask what they actually require for a shed that size, because a lot of towns let you skip the permit under 200 square feet but Parma counts anything over 10x10. Get the after the fact permit taken care of quick and don't drag it out, since the fine can grow the longer it sits. And next time your brother in law offers advice, ask him if he's the one paying the ticket.
