Last week I built a pergola in the rain and it was a total disaster

I decided to put up a 12x16 cedar pergola in my backyard last Thursday even though the forecast said thunderstorms. By the time I got the first post set, the ground turned into mud and my level kept sliding. I spent four hours wrestling with wet lumber and almost dropped a beam on my neighbor's fence. Has anyone else tried tackling a big backyard project in bad weather and regretted it?

Three years ago I tried to lay a 10x12 paver patio in a steady drizzle and learned that lesson the hard way. The concrete sand turned into soup and every paver I set sank at a different angle, looked like a funhouse floor when I was done. I finally gave up after two hours, covered everything with tarps, and waited three days for the ground to dry out. When I went back at it I used a string line and a longer level that I kept clean with a rag, and it came out perfectly straight. Sometimes you just have to admit the weather won and start over with dry conditions.
