Buddy in Texas told me I was overbuilding my shed foundation and he was right

Was helping my neighbor Mike pour a 6-inch thick slab for a 8x10 tool shed last month when his dad stopped by and said I was wasting concrete. He pointed out that a 4-inch slab with proper gravel base is plenty for that size structure unless I'm parking a truck in there. Anyone else find out they've been overdoing their shed builds for years?

Why did Mike's dad say 4 inches is enough when the standard I see online is always 6 inches?

My uncle said the same thing when I was learning to drive stick shift, he was adamant that anything over 4 inches was just showing off lol. I remember my cousin bragging about his 6 inch sub at lunch and my uncle just laughed and said enjoy your cold cuts kid. Honestly the more I think about it the more I realize all these online guys are just measuring things in their imagination lol.

I feel like you gotta ask who exactly "online" is here. Are we talking a specific forum for car guys or like a general Reddit thing? Because I swear half the people bragging about 6 inches probably never even measured anything in their life, they just repeat what sounds tough. Mike's dad might have a point if he's talking about something practical, like fitting in a tight garage or a particular job.
