Unpopular opinion: free-range is overrated for city lots

Had a guy at the feed store swear his birds never touch his garden. Mine hit my tomato patch 3 times in one week last June. Lost about 20 bucks of plants before I fenced them in. Anyone else find the 'happy free-range' thing just means more work?
