Three of my hens decided to nest in a pile of brush I was about to burn last Saturday

I was out back with the brush pile I'd been putting off for months, had the lighter fluid ready, and then I heard that soft little clucking sound. Three of my buff orpingtons had burrowed under there and were sitting on eggs they'd been hiding. I almost had chicken soup for dinner but not the way I planned lol. I spent the next hour carefully pulling apart the pile by hand and moving them to the coop. Has anyone else had birds pick the worst possible spot to go broody?

Oh man, that's a close call. I had a silkie once decide the best spot for her eggs was inside an old wheelbarrow I had parked next to the compost pile. Found her when I went to move it and she gave me the dirtiest look a chicken can give. Glad you spotted them before things got toasty.

See, I gotta disagree a little. That "dirtiest look" from a silkie is like their version of a shrug. They always look offended. But honestly, having a hen pick a spot like a wheelbarrow or a hot greenhouse is totally on us for not providing better options. It's not really her fault for being a chicken, you know? We're the ones who put the tractor near the compost pile and left a wheelbarrow sitting there.
