That $220 incubator was a dud, but my hen did the job anyway
Back in 2018 I got all fancy and bought a digital incubator for my Easter Eggers, thought it would beat the old ways for sure. It cooked half the eggs on day 18 because the thermostat lied, so I tossed it and let my broody hen Martha sit on the next batch. She hatched 8 out of 10 with zero gadgets, so why do we keep overpaying for these machines when a good hen is free?

Martha sounds like a real champ, I had a Buff Orpington named Goldie that did the same thing for me back in 2021. She hatched 7 out of 9 after my fancy Styrofoam bator kept dropping the humidity like crazy. I think the issue is these machines give you a false sense of control, you check the numbers but the air pockets or the turning mechanism screws up somewhere you can't see. A hen knows when to get off, when to stay, and she flips those eggs way more natural. Now I just keep a couple broody hens around every spring and save the $220 for chicken feed.
