Switched from straw to pine shavings for bedding and it's night and day for smell
Straw always got damp and stinky after a week, but pine shavings have kept my coop fresh for almost three weeks now with way less effort. Has anyone else found a bedding that just doesn't work for your setup no matter what you try?

What is it about straw that makes it hold moisture like a sponge?

Oh man, pine shavings are a total game changer right? I tried straw once and after about four days I was like, why does my coop smell like a damp basement that a skunk died in. It just held moisture like it was its job. Pine shavings dry out way faster and they actually smell kind of nice too. I will never go back to straw, that stuff is useless for anything except maybe a scarecrow.
