Rant: The feed store in Millerton is selling chicks way too young

I went to pick up some scratch grains at the Millerton Feed & Seed yesterday, and they had a whole batch of chicks that couldn't have been more than a day old. I mean, their down was still wet in spots. I think selling them that young is just asking for trouble for new keepers. Has anyone else seen this lately, or is it just my local spot pushing them out the door too fast?

My neighbor got some that young and ended up with pasty butt on every single one. It was a rough week for her.

Yeah, that's a huge red flag. My buddy over in Oak Creek bought a couple "day old" pullets from a farm store last spring, and it was a total mess. They hadn't even fully absorbed their yolk sacs and were so weak. He had to keep them on a heating pad for a week and hand feed them with a dropper. Two of the three still didn't make it past day five. It's just cruel to sell them that young, and it sets up beginners for a really sad first try. Stores really should hold them longer.

Man, that's awful. It reminds me of the time my cousin got some chicks mailed to her through the post office. They showed up half frozen and stressed out, packed in a box with holes. She lost half the order right off the bat. The whole mail-order chick thing seems so risky, even if they're a bit older.
