Picked a Sapphire Gem over a Wyandotte for my first flock - mixed feelings

I had to choose between a Sapphire Gem and a Silver Laced Wyandotte for my new coop in Nashville. Went with the Sapphire because I read they lay more eggs, around 5 a week. She's friendly but the eggs are smaller than I expected, maybe medium at best. Anyone else find Sapphire Gems lay smaller eggs than advertised?

Haha yeah I fell for the same thing with my Sapphire Gem. Got her from a hatchery that promised "large brown eggs" but they're barely medium, maybe even small some days. I weigh them sometimes and they average like 50 grams which is definitely not what I was expecting. The Wyandotte eggs I've seen from a buddy's flock are noticeably bigger, like jumbo almost. The Sapphire makes up for it by laying almost every single day though, I swear mine hasn't missed a day in months. Just wish those eggs would size up a bit, you know?

My barred rock hen lays about the same size eggs, right around 50-55 grams. I feel your pain on those hatchery promises. They always make it sound like you're getting jumbos and then you end up with these tiny things that barely fill a carton. I've got a Rhode Island Red that lays eggs so big she sometimes struggles to get them out, and it's a whole different world. But you're right, the daily production is hard to beat with those Sapphires. I'd trade size for consistency any day if I'm being honest, especially come winter when everyone else slows down.
