My neighbor finally called me out on my chicken feed storage
Had a neighbor in Peoria mention my feed bin smell after I left it open one afternoon. She said it attracts rats and makes the feed stale. Switched to a galvanized metal can with a locking lid. Cost me $35 at Tractor Supply. Anyone else use a different method to keep feed fresh?

my neighbor finally called me out on my chicken feed storage" and she mentioned the smell? That's wild to me. I leave my feed bin open all the time, never even thought about it bothering anyone. I would have been so embarrassed if someone called me out like that. But good on her for saying something, honestly, because now I'm paranoid about rats getting into mine. Switching to a metal can with a locking lid sounds basic but smart.

Oh man, that brings back a memory. My buddy had this whole setup in his garage for his hens, and he left the feed bag open just sitting on a shelf. He didn't think anything of it until his wife started finding mouse droppings in the kitchen cabinets. Turns out the mice were coming in from the garage and nesting right next to the feed. He had to spend a weekend sealing up every crack in his foundation and switching to airtight bins. Said it was the most stressful few days of his life dealing with that infestation. So honestly, your neighbor might have done you a huge favor without even realizing it.
