Just realized crushed eggshells need to be baked first or they won't work

I kept throwing raw eggshells into my coop for months thinking my hens were getting calcium. Turns out they were just ignoring them because raw shells take too long to break down. A buddy at the Tacoma feed store told me to bake them at 250 for 10 minutes then crush them fine. Now I mix a tablespoon into their feed every week and the shell quality on my eggs is way better. Anyone else find a weird trick for calcium that actually works?

Oh wow, nothing says "fine dining" like baked eggshells. Yum.
