Hot take: I stopped letting my hens free-range all day after a hawk took one in my yard last Tuesday.

Now they get a big, secure run from 10 AM to 4 PM only, and I haven't lost a bird since. What's your predator schedule?

My schedule is basically whenever I remember to let them out. Lost two last month because I got distracted by a podcast.

Ever notice how modern life seems built to break our focus on simple tasks? We have endless streams of information pulling us away from the real, physical things right in front of us. It is not just about pets, it is about missing the pot boiling over or forgetting to turn off a light because a notification popped up. Our attention is the real resource being managed here, and it feels like it is constantly overdrawn. That loss is a high price to pay for a bit of distraction.

That podcast must have been really good, but man, that's a tough way to learn. I set a repeating alarm on my phone for my own pets, but even that isn't perfect. It makes me wonder if the animals themselves could somehow give a signal when it's time, like a specific bell they could ring. We train them for so many other things, maybe that's the next step.
