Heat lamp or no heat lamp in winter? That neighbor lady changed my mind.

Last December in Portland my neighbor Brenda came over. Saw my heat lamp setup in the coop. She told me I was babying my birds too much. Said chickens adapt fine to cold if they have dry shelter. Pointed out a fire risk I hadn't thought about. Lost one hen to a lamp malfunction two winters ago? No. But her story stuck with me. Now I run no heat below 20 degrees. My Wyandottes are fine. Anyone else ditch the lamps after talking to someone?

Brenda's story hits close to home. I had a buddy in Seattle who lost three birds to a lamp fire back in 2018. He said the smoke smell was the worst part. Now I just make sure my coop is dry and draft-free and let the birds do their thing.
