Question about the Wind River High Route vs the standard CDT section

Everyone pushes the official CDT section through the Winds, but I did the Skurka Wind River High Route last summer and it's just a better experience. The CDT sticks to valleys and feels like a highway, while the High Route puts you on actual alpine passes with way better views, like Texas Pass. Has anyone else felt the official trail was a bit overrated for that area?

Totally agree. The CDT is for getting through, the high route is for being there. Worth the extra effort for those views.

Hold on, saying the CDT "misses the point" is a stretch. That valley trail is a classic for a reason. It lets you actually look up at those peaks instead of fighting your way over them. You get to cover real miles, see more lakes, and honestly, not everyone wants to scramble on sketchy passes all day. Sometimes the point is just walking in a beautiful place without the extra stress.

You're right about the CDT feeling like a highway there. The high route is more work but it's the real alpine experience you go to the Winds for. That valley trail is fine for miles but it misses the point.
