Missed a trail junction by 3 miles because my map app was offline and I didn't check
Last month I hiked the Eagle Creek loop near Portland and thought I had the route down since I'd looked at it on my phone at the trailhead. About 3 miles in, my signal dropped and I kept walking straight past a fork I should have turned left at. I ended up on a horse trail for another 2 hours before I realized nothing looked right. I had a paper map in my pack the whole time but never pulled it out. Now I'm paranoid about offline maps being actually downloaded before I leave. Does anyone else have a go-to way to double check junctions before a trip, or do you just print the map and hope for the best?
