I used to plan every mile on a map before trips, now I just wing it with a compass and a rough idea

For years I was that guy with a printed topo map and a day-by-day itinerary down to the campsite. Then on a hike in the Smokies last fall, I got stuck behind a slow group for 3 hours and my whole schedule fell apart. I sat there frustrated and realized I was missing the point of being out there. Now I just pick a general direction, mark a few water sources, and adjust on the fly. It's way more relaxing and I've found some amazing spots I never would have planned for. Anyone else ditch the detailed plans for a looser style?

That really hit home for me. I had almost the same thing happen in the Rockies a few years back. Got so wrapped up in hitting specific campsites each night that I stressed out over every wrong turn. Finally ditched the rigid plan and just started wandering with a map and a few goals. Best decision ever. Now I actually stop to enjoy the views instead of rushing to the next checkpoint.
