I finally stopped trusting the ranger's shortcut advice
Last summer in the Sawtooths, a ranger at the Stanley trailhead told me to skip the scree field on the Alpine Way and cut through the creek bed instead. Saved 2 miles on paper, but it took me 4 hours of boulder hopping and one twisted ankle to get back on track. The creek route had no markers and the water was way higher than the dry season map showed. I get that rangers know their turf, but has anyone else had official advice send them into a worse spot than the main trail?
