I finally stopped fighting the map and started reading the terrain

On the Appalachian Trail near Roan Mountain I kept missing turnoffs because I was glued to my phone's GPS. Tried using a paper map plus compass for a 12 mile stretch last weekend, and it was rough at first, but once I learned to spot the ridge lines and creek bends it clicked. Now I only pull out the phone for emergencies or resupply planning. Anyone else switched to old school navigation and stuck with it? What made it finally work for you?
