Got caught in a hailstorm on the High Sierra Trail at 11,000 feet and now I split my gear into 2 small bags
Three summers back I was crossing Forester Pass in a t-shirt when pea-sized hail started hammering down out of nowhere, and I spent 20 minutes hunched under a rock while everything in my one big pack got soaked. Since then I've run a 35L main bag plus a small 12L day bag so my sleep system and dry layers never sit in the same sack as my wet shell and filter. Half the folks I hike with say it's dead weight, the other half say it's the only reason they stay dry. Where do you all land on splitting into two bags versus just using a pack liner?
Getting pounded by hail at 11k in a t-shirt sounds like the universe decided to prank you personally. Splitting bags is basically just pack liner insurance with extra steps, and honestly I'd rather carry a few ounces of dead weight than wake up in a wet sleeping bag at 3am. My vote is keep the split, but make the day bag pull double duty so it's not totally useless weight on dry trips.
