Got caught in a freak hailstorm on the Pacific Crest Trail near Crater Lake last August and now I'm torn between carrying a tarp vs. a full rain fly

Did you catch that storm near Crater Lake? I used to be a diehard tarp person, thought the weight savings was worth everything. But after one night of sideways rain soaking my sleeping bag through my "perfect" pitch, I swapped to a full fly and never looked back.

Sideways rain soaking my sleeping bag" man, that hit way too close to home... I had the same exact "perfect pitch" delusion until my tarp turned into a bathtub and I woke up floating in a puddle of my own regret. Now I carry a tent that weighs as much as a small car, but at least I'm dry and can laugh about it while I'm wrestling the poles in the dark like a confused octopus. I still think about going back to the tarp life sometimes, then I remember the feeling of cold water creeping up my back and nope right out of that idea.
