Finally bought a proper water filter for the John Muir Trail last month. $90 and it saved me from a really bad time.

Oh, wait, that's actually a really important point. You need a water purifier for the JMT, not just a filter. A lot of the streams up there have viruses from all the people and animals. A normal filter only gets bacteria and stuff. I learned this the hard way a few years back.

Good filters are worth every penny" - yeah, I'm not so sure about that, @lilyfisher. I've done the JMT twice with just a regular filter and never had any issues. Viruses are super rare up there, and most people I know think the purifiers are overkill for the Sierra. Just stick to filtering from clear moving water and you'll be fine.
