Rant: Snapped a breaker bar on a lug nut that wasn't even stuck
I was in my driveway in Tacoma last Thursday, swapping winter tires off my buddy's F-150. Put the breaker bar on a rear lug nut, gave it a solid lean, and SNAP - the bar broke clean in two at the handle. Turns out the nut wasn't even seized, I just bought a cheap 30 dollar bar from a discount tool store two years ago. Now I'm on the ground with half a bar in my hand and my friend laughing his butt off. Anyone else had a tool fail on something that should have been easy?

I used to think you could cheap out on basic hand tools no problem but that "solid lean" part is exactly where I changed my mind. I snapped a harbor freight ratchet on a lawnmower blade bolt once and realized the risk isn't worth saving twenty bucks. A good breaker bar from a real brand is like ten dollars more and probably won't leave you holding half a tool.

Honestly I've used Harbor Freight Pittsburgh ratchets for years and never snapped one yet. I think a lot of it is technique and knowing when to use a breaker bar vs a ratchet. You're not supposed to put your whole body weight on a ratchet anyway. If you snap one on a lawnmower blade bolt you were probably using the wrong tool for the job. Plus those lifetime warranties mean you can just walk in and swap it out no questions asked.

Yeah I read something similar from a mechanic who said the difference is basically what happens when that cheap metal gives out. You might save ten bucks but then you're stuck holding two pieces of a broken tool with your hand still near whatever you were wrenching on. The risk is just not worth it for something that should last years.
