Lost $400 on a used transmission because I skipped the compression test
I bought a supposedly good used transmission from a salvage yard in Phoenix for my 2005 Civic. The guy swore it came from a running car with only 90k miles on it. I didn't bother to check the compression on the donor car's engine before pulling it, and now after install it's got a bad solenoid and I can't get my money back. Has anyone else gotten burned by a salvage yard part that wasn't tested properly?

I mean, "burned" is a strong word lol. A bad solenoid is annoying but it's not like the whole trans grenaded on you. I paid $300 for a junkyard 4L60E once that locked up in third gear after a week, now that was getting burned. A solenoid swap is like a $50 part and an afternoon of work if you're even a little handy. Next time just throw a meter on the solenoids before you bolt it in, takes 10 minutes tops.

Oh man that third gear lockup sounds brutal, I feel for you on that one. I've had a junkyard trans do something similar once, paid $250 for a 4L60E that started slipping within a week and I was just kicking myself the whole time. At least with a bad solenoid you're not stuck swapping the whole thing out again, just a little time and a few bucks.
