I mean, around where I live, there's been a weird increase in people trying to fix their own AC systems and making it worse.

Yeah, that "making it worse" part is so true. My neighbor tried to just top up his refrigerant with a can from the hardware store. He didn't realize he had a leak, so he wasted money and the system froze solid. Another guy I know messed with the electrical panel trying to save a service call and blew a capacitor. Ended up costing way more to fix his mistake. It's tough watching people think they're saving money when they're really just digging a deeper hole.
