Tried a heat gun instead of a torch on a bumper scuff, and I'm never going back
Had a light scuff on a silver Camry bumper cover last month, and my old propane torch kept bubbling the clear in one spot no matter how fast I moved it. Swapped to a cheap Wagner heat gun I grabbed for $30 at the hardware store in Reno, and the difference was night and day. The heat comes out wide and even, so the paint relaxes instead of scorching, and I got the scuff to lay flat on the first pass. What temp range are you guys running on plastic covers that have already been resprayed?
Man, this is the same deal as when I stopped using my angle grinder for everything and picked up a $20 orbital sander. Same job, way less damage, and I actually finish instead of fixing my own mistakes. The torch bubbles clear because the heat is pinpoint and way hotter than plastic wants, the gun spreads it out so the whole panel warms up together and the paint can relax back down. I run around 400 to 500F on resprayed covers but I keep the gun moving and watch it from a few inches back, if the paint starts to gloss up too fast that's my sign to back off.
