Serious question, did that $12 slide hammer kit from Harbor Freight actually save anyone's quarter panel or just mine?
Two guys at my shop swear the cheap stud welder and slide hammer kits are junk and you need the $300+ units from a tool truck to pull dents right. I laughed at them for a while and kept borrowing the shop's old Matco setup. Then about 4 months ago I was doing a rear quarter pull on a '14 Civic and the Matco gun died mid-job, so I ran to Harbor Freight on my lunch break and grabbed the $12 slide hammer kit just to get the car out the door. It pulled the dent cleaner than I expected and the studs held without snapping. I've used it on maybe 15 more panels since then and it's still kicking, which honestly kind of annoys me because I dropped real money on my other setup. Now I'm not saying it replaces a good stud welder for every job, heavier panels and rusted metal still fight you. But for light pulls and quick work it's held up way better than the price tag says it should. So who's right here, am I just getting lucky with a cheap kit or are the tool truck guys selling us stuff we don't actually need?
