Old timer in Wichita showed me how to block a hood with a 2x4 and wet sand

Back in 2009 I was doing a last minute hood repair before a big insurance deadline, and this retired body man from the Dodge dealer walked over while I was struggling with a DA. He just grabbed a scrap 2x4, wrapped it in 320 grit, and said 'you're fighting the crown, not the panel.' He then showed me how to follow the curve in one long pass, and it took me maybe 20 minutes to get a finish I'd been fighting for half a day. Has anyone else picked up a weird old trick from a passerby that still beats your fancy tool? I still keep a sharpened piece of wood in my cart for tricky spots.
