Hot take: nobody needs a $2000 paint gun to lay down good clear coat

I see guys spending a whole paycheck on guns when their technique is trash, I've been getting better results with a $300 Devilbiss and proper prep work over 8 years in the shop. Has anyone else actually tested this side by side or is it just brand hype?

Man I used to be one of those guys dropping big money on guns because I thought it was the shortcut to good work. But you're right, I finally tested a cheaper gun against my expensive one last year and honestly the results were barely different once I dialed in my prep. I spent years convincing myself the tool mattered more than the prep work and that was just wrong. Now I tell every new guy the same thing you're saying, spend your money on sandpaper and clean air filtration instead of a fancy gun. It's humbling to admit I was chasing hype but the proof is in the final finish not the price tag.

$300 Devilbiss user here too and @felixb25 nailed it, prep beats price every time.
